Organizing your files and folders

Oulim sorts movies, series, your own videos and trailers using only file and folder names. Name things as shown below and posters and plots will match too. When a file is ambiguous, Oulim doesn’t force a guess — it simply lists it as a video.

Movies

Put the title and year in the file name. Folder names aren’t used for the title. You don’t need a folder per movie, but a folder makes trailers easier.

📁 Movies/
   └ Dune (2021).mkv
   └ Dune.Part.Two.2024.2160p.WEB-DL.mkv
   └ 📁 Inception (2010)/
      └ Inception (2010).mp4
Everything up to the year is the title (with or without parentheses)
  • Quality and codec words like 1080p, 2160p, BluRay, WEB-DL, x265, HDR or DTS are stripped automatically.
  • Without a year, the text before a quality word becomes the title (for example Arrival 1080p.mkv).
  • A file with neither a year nor a quality word (like drone trip.mp4) is listed as a video, not a movie.

Note Split files such as CD1 and CD2 aren’t joined, and sample files aren’t filtered out. Move files you don’t want out of your library folders.

Series and TV shows

Anything with an episode marker is grouped as a series. The text before the marker becomes the series name, and season folders work too.

📁 TV/
   └ 📁 Severance/
      └ 📁 Season 1/
         └ Severance.S01E01.Good.News.1080p.mkv
         └ E02.mkv
   └ 📁 Moving/
      └ Moving 시즌1 03화.mp4
   └ The Office 2x05.avi
Severance S1 E1 “Good News” and E2, Moving S1 E3, The Office S2 E5
Written asRecognized as
S01E02 · s1e2 · S01.E02Season 1, episode 2
1x02Season 1, episode 2
시즌1 03화 · 제3화 · 3회 (Korean)Season 1, episode 3
[Sub] Frieren - 05 [1080p]Season 1, episode 5 (anime style)
E03 · EP03 · Episode 3When inside a season folder (Season 1 · S01 · 시즌 1)

Tip Text after the episode marker becomes the episode title. If the file name has no series name, the folder above the season folder is used.

Trailers

Trailers don’t show up as separate library items. You play them with the Trailer button on the movie’s detail page. Use any of these three layouts:

📁 Movies/
   └ Dune (2021).mkv
   └ Dune (2021)-trailer.mp4
   └ 📁 Inception (2010)/
      └ Inception (2010).mp4
      └ trailer.mkv
   └ 📁 Arrival (2016)/
      └ Arrival (2016).mkv
      └ 📁 Trailers/
         └ Teaser.mp4
         └ Official Trailer.mp4
  • Same name as the movie + -trailer: Dune (2021)-trailer.mp4. Endings -trailer, .trailer, _trailer or teaser all work (numbers like trailer2 too). Matching is by name, so several movies can share a folder.
  • A file named trailer or teaser: becomes the trailer of the only movie in that folder.
  • A Trailers (or Trailer, Teasers) folder: put it right inside the movie’s folder and every file in it becomes that movie’s trailer — again, with only one movie in the folder above.

Tip Trailers attach to movies only. A file with an episode marker like S01E02 stays an episode even if “trailer” is in its name.

Subtitles

Subtitles in the same folder whose names start with the video’s file name are loaded automatically. Add a language code to the name to choose between languages.

📁 Dune (2021)/
   └ Dune (2021).mkv
   └ Dune (2021).ko.srt
   └ Dune (2021).en.srt
   └ Dune (2021).smi
  • Formats: SMI, SRT, VTT, ASS and SSA
  • Language codes: ko · kor · kr (Korean), en · eng (English), ja · jpn (Japanese), zh · chs · cht (Chinese) and other two-letter codes
  • The subtitle turned on at first matches Settings › Subtitles › Preferred subtitle language; if it’s empty, the app language is used.
  • Older encodings are detected automatically. If characters look garbled, pick one in Settings › Subtitles › Subtitle encoding.
  • Videos on a NAS find subtitles in the same folder too.

Note Subtitles in subfolders such as Subs aren’t found. Keep them next to the video.

My videos (camera and screen recordings)

Videos from your phone camera, action cams or screen recordings go to the My videos tab instead of mixing with movies. The recording date is read from the name.

  • Folders: videos under DCIM, Camera, 100MEDIA, Screen recordings or 화면 녹화
  • Names: device-style names like VID_20241015_123456, PXL_…, 20241015_123456, IMG_1234, GOPR0123, GX010123, DJI_0001 or KakaoTalk_Video_…

Music

  • Tags inside the song (title, artist, album, cover) come first.
  • Without tags, the folder name becomes the album and the file name the song title (01 - Song.mp3 → Song, track 1).
  • Lyrics: a .lrc file with the same name in the same folder scrolls along with the song.
📁 Music/
   └ 📁 Album Name/
      └ 01 - Song.flac
      └ 01 - Song.lrc
      └ 02 - Other Song.flac

Note Album covers come only from pictures embedded in the songs. A cover.jpg in the folder isn’t read yet.

What isn’t added

  • Recycle bins and system folders: $RECYCLE.BIN, System Volume Information, @eaDir, #recycle, #snapshot, lost+found
  • On desktop: hidden files and anything starting with a dot
  • WMV and ASF files are listed but marked as unplayable
  • Files that disappear aren’t deleted right away — they’re marked as missing

When the info is wrong

  1. On the movie or series detail page, find Wrong info? and click Fix match.
  2. Adjust the Search term and Year, search again, and pick the right one under Matches with Use this.
  3. Turn on Lock info to keep it from changing. To remove wrong info, use Clear info for this file.

Tip If the category itself is wrong — say, a movie filed as a series — rename the file following the rules above. For a series, fixing one episode re-matches the whole series.

Adding and removing library folders

  • In Settings › Library › Library folders, use Add folder, or Remove next to a folder. On Android, Find on this device finds videos across the whole device.
  • For a NAS folder, open it in the Network screen and choose Add to library. The same file reached several ways is merged into one.
  • On desktop, changes are picked up automatically. To redo everything, use Rescan the whole library.
